What Kinds of Chemicals Are Present in Hair Dye?
We should probably let you know up front that there’s no color that is completely organic. All hair color contains chemicals. Some hair colors contain chemicals that some women are allergic to. Often, women are allergic to a chemical found in hair color called PPD. PPD stands for paraphenylenediamine. Called “coal tar dye,” PPD contains chemicals, such as toluene, xylene, and benzene, which can be hazardous in large quantities. Coal tar dye comes directly from the manufacturer of coal or petroleum. PPD is also used in temporary tattoos and can cause severe allergic reactions in some people.
Indigo, black, and mauve hair dyes have PPD in them. There’s no arguing that the effect is stunning. However, some people want to be as chemical-free as possible. Other women want to avoid an allergic reaction. There are alternatives to harsh chemicals if you look hard enough. This is true even if you want to color your hair every color of the rainbow.
